The room was nice and spaceous, very clean. Very nice and helpful staff. The hotel is located next to the highway but I had asked for a quiet room and got one to the back side with a nice view of the garden - it was perfectly quiet. The hotel is only a 2-minutes drive away from the Departure Bay ferry terminal. (Reviewed by Daniela, Solo traveler, New York, United States of America, posted at Booking.comnon  July 3, 2012)

“Great budget bargain”
Stayed overnight after an afternoon ferry trip from Vancouver. It is definitely a budget motel on a main road but it is close to the ferry and walking distance to downtown Nanaimo - we strolled along the foreshore.

The room was small with 2 double beds but clean and neat and the beds were comfortable. We had a room on the second level overlooking the back garden so had minimum road noise. For the price it was a bargain. (Reviewed by Travellers026, Adelaide, South Australia. Stayed in May 2012, traveled as a couple. Reviewed June 5, 2012, TripAdvisor)

Friendly owners, clean comfortable units with all facilities --
walk to restaurants and shopping mall -- close to ferries. (Reviewed by Michael, Mature couple, Two Rocks, Australia, posted at Booking.com on May 29, 2012)

“A little cramped but lovely room”
We were met by 'Yan" who booked us in -- she was lovely and very helpful giving us advice on the catching the ferry and other touristy questions.

The property is located on a busy road so she gave us an upstairs room which has a corridor giving a buffer to the road noise. (as it turned out if was very quiet). The rooms are well maintained and tastefully decorated with prints nice lamp shades etc that make the room a pleasure to stay in.

We had two double beds which were very comfortable as were the pillows - even had a doona/duvet. Sheets etc were spotlessly clean and good quality (Egyptian cotton)

Bathroom was spotlessly clean if a little small - not a a lot of bench space around the hand basin.
The room has a large window with a nice outlook over trees and bush. Room is equipped with frig, microwave and TV. There is a mall nearby with fast foods, asian restaurant and general restaurant.

All in all a lovely property the only complaint being the room is a little on the small side compared to other motels we have stayed in....

Room Tip: Upstairs room would be more insulated from road noise than downstairs rooms. Downstairs rooms have...(Reviewed by Mickn Olga, Perth, Australia. Stayed May 2012, traveled as a couple. Reviewed May 24, 2012 TripAdvisor)

“Exactly what I was expecting and needed”
I chose it based on all the reviews I read. It was very easy to find. The lady that greeted me was warm and personable. She advised that the window would be open when we got into the room, so it might be a little chilly. We had a room at the back, overlooking a charming back yard with trees.

It was quiet, and we did not hear any traffic noise. The room had two queen size beds, and the mattresses were very comfy. Of course the room was a little dated - so what. I have rooms at home that are a little dated. I have stayed in high end hotels where the mattresses were harder and less comfortable.
The room was clean, as was the bathroom.

There was a small fridge, coffee maker, t.v. and A.C. for if the weather ever gets hot. My daughter and I had a great sleep, and left early in the morning for her softball game, dropping the keys off in the mailbox. For the purpose of having to be somewhere early the next day, it fit the bill perfectly.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back are probably the quietest, although that part of town seemed pretty quiet late at...

This is excellent value accommodation. The room was fresh and clean, and the Motel appears to be recently renovated. There was a coffee and tea maker provided in the room plus digital TV and Wi-Fi connection available. The Terminal Plaza is within walking distance with a restaurant and fast food outlets and a Save-on Food store. I recommend when booking you ask for a room at the rear away from the road at the front, it is much quieter. “Small, comfy and clean. ” My husband and I stayed at the Colonial for four nights as we considered moving to the lovely city of Nanaimo. Hesitant at first, as its the tiniest motel we'd ever encountered, we were immediately pleased. As others have written, our room was spotlessly clean and the pleasant owners made us feel welcome. They strike the right balance between ensuring you have what you need and leaving you to your privacy.

We need a kitchenette due to dietary concerns, and with a hot plate, microwave, sink and plates, forks etc, it fit our needs. With local grocery store and other amenities just a block away, the location was also very convenient. We ended up walking most places and only rented a car for one day!
It's not a luxury hotel, but it is a great option for those on a budget or those who require a kitchenette. We will be staying at the Colonial again in May!

Room Tip: The lower units have a sliding door to a small deck, which would be lovely in the summer months! (By Stephanie Clark, Ontario, Canada, on TripAdvisor posted on March 23, 2012 and stayed in March 2012, traveled as a couple)

“Excellent value and friendly service” The owners of this small motel were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The rate was most reasonable and the room was spotlessly clean. It's well equipped with small frig. and microwave, free high-speed wireless internet, TV, and other amenities. The back rooms on the upper floor face a small garden and trees, and are quieter. I'm a light sleeper and was able to sleep well. The location is convenient for ferry, downtown and shopping malls. It was just what we were looking for - excellent value at modest cost. We didn't need luxuries and a larger motel for one night. We would recommend it, and stay there again.

“Very high level of service” I had the pleasure of staying here on a business trip. The rooms were clean, but the real attraction was the level of service. The owners go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Friendly smiles, attention to detail, simply better than most. The building is smaller than nearby motels, but do not let that stop you from staying there. I will be staying there again, on my next trip to Nanaimo. “Friendly Service perfect for a stopover.” We had a nice stay at the Colonial the rate was low, service friendly, beds comfy. All amenities were provided and the lady at the front desk was super friendly and helpful. The water pressure in the shower could be better but that is hardly anything to complain about. Its a lovely 20 minute stroll down the sea wall to the town and easy to access from ferry and even easier to take off to Tofino! (Reviewed by Grandy

“Good sleep, room clean, very nice staff” -- If you need a 50 (52) dollar room that is actually a 50 dollar room this is your place. I went to 3 other hotels in the area that advertised this price, once I got in, they said it was a seniors rate. The staff has been extremely courteous, the place is always clean, its cheap. Its a busy street, but it is quiet enough for me. If the area is bad I haven't noticed yet. If you need a room for the night and nothing more, this is your place. I gave it a 5 out of 5 for the value, it is just a basic room with 2 beds, a tv, desk microwave, fridge and so on. Location I gave a 3 because it is on a busy road, but it seems like the mojority are on busy roads here. (Reviewed by Tsferg, Victoria, BC, Canada on TripAdvisor posted on February 25, 2011. “A good place to stay when your passing through” -This is a nice, small motel on the main road through Nanaimo. Not a lot of units, but clean and neat. The proprietors are friendly and the rates are good. The rooms have internet reception, good lighting and cable television. The unit we stayed in had a compact kitchenette with small refrigerator/freezer. We would stay there again when in the area. (Reviewed by San Dimas, CA, U.S.A. on TripAdvisor posted on Mar. 5, 2010. “Comfy and clean - no complaints!” - I have stayed here several times and always had a good time - none of the problems mentioned by some of the reviewers. The rooms are clean and the beds are very comfortable. The motel is near the road so can be noisy when traffic is heavy. The upstairs rooms are quieter than the kitchenettes. It getting more popular and the last time I tried to reserve, they were fully booked! But Jane called me when they got a cancellation, so I was able to stay there after all. I appreciate the motel being completely smoke-free. (Reviewed by KoOntheroad Nanaimo, BC on TripAdvisor, posted on November 12, 2009. Stayed November 2009, traveled as a couple)

"Great stay, great bargain” -- We arrived in Nanaimo and went straight to the Visitor Centre as we had no idea where to stay. They had just recently been to visit this motel and commented that it had newly been redecorated and was a fantastic price for what you got. They kindly rang and booked in for us and we met Jane when we arrived. She happily showed us our room and made us feel welcome. We had the kingsize bed with a little kitchenette which suited us perfectly. Just a few minutes walk away was a mall where we were able to buy our groceries and so cooked our own dinner and breakfast.

The most wonderful thing was the bed - I had the best night's sleep ever! In fact I had to ask them what the mattress was so I could get one!

This motel is nothing fancy but it is brilliant for the price and absolutely what we wanted. We were nearing the end of our holiday and trying not to spend outside our budget and altho we had stayed in much fancier hotels we were more than happy with our stay at the Colonial (Reviewed by Aliben68, London, U.K. on TripAdvisor, posted on July 21, 2009.
